1. Mapping Irrigated Croplands From 2000 to 2019 in China

Agricultural irrigation, as an important practice to protect crops from drought and promote grain yield, has a long history in China. A timely and precise dataset about the extent and dynamics of irrigated areas is necessary for water allocation and agricultural management but is scarce in China. Here we developed annual irrigated cropland maps across China (IrriMap_CN) at 500-m resolution from 2000 to 2019, using MODIS data, machine-learning method, and Google Earth Engine platform. First, we generated annual nationwide training samples by strictly screening the existing irrigation maps downscaled from the statistical data. Second, we implemented locally adaptive random forest classifiers in 511 nominal 1°×1° grid cells across China with MODIS vegetation indices, climatic factors, and topography variables. Third, we conducted nationwide pixel-wise validation of the IrriMap_CN using independent samples. The validation results based on more than 3,000 ground truth points revealed that IrriMap_CN had high accuracies ranging from 77.2% to 85.9% The time series of IrriMap_CN detected substantial expansion of irrigated areas in Xinjiang and Heilongjiang (more than 50% in total) and pronounced decreases in Sichuan, Jiangsu, and Hebei. The analyses of irrigation frequency, start time, and end time implied that North China Plain was the most intensive irrigated area; but the irrigation area showed a decreasing trend since 2000, consistent with the reduced agricultural water consumption. The annual irrigation datasets allow us to understand the spatiotemporal dynamics of irrigated croplands in China and are expected to contribute to the improvement of earth system models and facilitate sustainable agricultural water management.

2. Declined Irrigation Cooling Effects in Northwest China

The cooling effects of agricultural irrigation on land surface temperature (LST) are more evident in arid areas like Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (Xinjiang) in northwest China. In the 21st century, irrigation practices improved, and the water-saving irrigation (WSI) area increased substantially from 1266 ha in 2000 to 2916 ha in 2019. However, it remains unknown how the cooling effects changed along with the increasing WSI area relative to traditional irrigation. Here we examine the changes in irrigation cooling effects on LST in Xinjiang from 2000 to 2020 at multi-spatiotemporal scales and analyze their relationship with irrigation water use (IWU). We find a significant decrease in daytime cooling effects (0.21 K/decade) but an increase in nighttime cooling (-0.17 K/decade) over stable croplands in Xinjiang, both of which significantly (P < 0.1) correlate to the decreased IWU. Seasonally, the weakened daytime cooling effect is most evident in late summer and early spring. Spatially, the decrease in the cooling effects is much more prominent in South Xinjiang (0.48 K/decade, p < 0.05) than in North Xinjiang, possibly due to their different WSI extents, intensities, and climate conditions (e.g., precipitation). Furthermore, we identify different cooling alleviation trends in two different agricultural systems: state farms with more advanced WSI measurements and conventional farms with fewer WSI infrastructures. We find that the state farms had a higher LST (∆LST: 0.60 K) and vapor pressure deficit (∆VPD: 0.013 kPa) than conventional farms in 2000, but that gap significantly decreased to 0.32 K and 0.002 kPa in 2020 due to increasing WSI in conventional farms, suggesting that the promotion of WSI dampened the irrigation cooling effects in Xinjiang. Our findings show that WSI lessens the cooling effect of irrigation, and we suggest that WSI-related effects on temperature should be considered in climate modeling and climate change scenarios.

3. Evaluation of six 30-m cropland datasets in China

With the development of remote sensing technology, more and more fine-resolution cropland datasets have emerged as powerful tools for agriculture planning and food security evaluation. But questions about their accuracy and reliability must be answered before using them, making evaluations necessary. So far, little attention has been paid to the performance of fine-resolution (e.g., 30 m) and cropland-specific products at continental or regional scales. This study implemented a comparison analysis and accuracy assessment for six cropland products with a 30-m resolution in China circa 2015, including FROM-GLC, GLC_FCS, CLCD, AGLC, GFSAD, GLAD. Their similarities and disparities were delineated at national, provincial, meridional, and zonal scales. 33,713 ground truth points were then collected through visual interpretation of Google Earth images and from existing available validation datasets, to evaluate the pixel-wise accuracy of them across China. In terms of spatial consistency, high agreement among the six products could be found in North China Plain and Northeast China, and low agreement was found in Southern, Southwest, and Northwest China. Topography including elevation and slope are important factors influencing spatial consistency. As for provincial area accuracy, CLCD and AGLC were most correlated with statistical data (r2>0.9), followed by GLAD (0.88) and AGLC (0.87). FROM-GLC had the lowest correlation (r2=0.37) with statistics. The relative area differences between each product and statistics also demonstrated that CLCD had the best area accuracies in most provinces. By contrast, GLC_FCS had a severe overestimation and FROM-GLC suffered from a large underestimation of cropland area. Last, the pixel-wise validation results indicated that CLCD and GLAD had the highest overall accuracy (OA) of 0.88, followed by AGLC (0.85) and GFSAD (0.84). FROM-GLC and GLC_FCS had the lowest OAs of less than 0.70. The comparison and evaluation results in this study can provide insights into the national and provincial performances of these fine-resolution cropland products and expect to give valuable references for guiding data usage and help to improve future land use/cover mapping.
